Default TO MEMBERS OF THE SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE

For lending their voices to the growing chorus eager to lay blame for the violence in Iraq on the Iraqi people. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the committee's new chairman, told the committee that "we should put the responsibility for Iraq's future squarely where it belongs — on the Iraqis." His sentiments received wide bipartisan support. The senators are not alone in finger-wagging that points anywhere but here. The House Armed Services Committee, the Iraq Study Group, even former secretary of state Colin Powell, have played the blame game. But America must bear significant responsibility for creating the current situation in Iraq. If it does not, it adds credence to the idea that we're heading for the door, an idea that can only further escalate the shootout in Iraq.
